What is an eSIM?

A SIM card that's built into your phone. Here's how it works, and why it can save you a fortune abroad.

The short version

An eSIM (embedded SIM) does the same job as a plastic SIM card, but it's a chip built into your phone. Instead of posting you a card, the network sends a digital profile that you install by scanning a QR code or tapping a button in an app.

Most phones can hold several eSIMs and switch between them in settings. That's what makes them so handy for travel: you add a cheap data plan for your trip, and your normal UK number keeps working alongside it.

Why travel eSIMs are cheaper

Travel eSIM companies buy data in bulk from local networks in each country and sell it to you as a simple bundle, such as 10GB for 30 days. Compare that with UK roaming, where the big networks charge about £6 to £8 a day outside Europe.

A week in Turkey on roaming can cost over £40. A 10GB eSIM for the same trip is often under £10. See the full roaming comparison.

eSIM plus points

  • Buy and install before you travel, no airport SIM queue.
  • Keep your UK number active for calls, texts and bank codes.
  • Switch between plans in settings, no tiny SIM tool.
  • Can't fall out or be swapped by a thief.
Watch out for: your phone must be unlocked, and most travel eSIMs are data only, with no local phone number. WhatsApp and FaceTime calls still work in most countries.

Which phones?

Most iPhones from the XS onwards, plus recent Samsung Galaxy, Google Pixel and many other Android phones. Check yours.

FAQ

Common questions

Can I use an eSIM and a normal SIM at the same time?

Yes, on most phones that support eSIM. Keep your UK SIM for calls and texts, and use the eSIM for data.

Is an eSIM safer than a plastic SIM?

In one way, yes: a thief can't just pop it out of your phone. Transferring an eSIM usually needs your phone unlocked or an account login.

Can I reuse a travel eSIM?

Many providers let you top up the same eSIM on a later trip, which saves installing a new one. Check the provider's app.
