Mobile in Cyprus: what to know
Mobile networks
Coverage
Towns and main resorts in the Republic have good 4G and 5G, though coverage outside the main cities can be patchier; the north runs on its own Turkish-linked networks that are outside EU roaming.
Wi-Fi
Hotels and cafes in the main towns and resorts generally offer Wi-Fi, but a local SIM or eSIM is more dependable on the move.
WhatsApp and FaceTime calls
No restrictions: WhatsApp, FaceTime and other app calls work normally over mobile data and Wi-Fi.
Buying a local SIM
Straightforward: Cyta, Epic and PrimeTel have kiosks in the arrivals hall at Larnaca airport, with more options after baggage claim at Paphos. Take your passport, as operators such as Epic ask for it. Tourist SIMs cost about EUR 10 to 20, for example Epic's Holiday SIM with 100GB for EUR 20 over 15 days.
Emergency number
112 or 199
Tips for UK travellers
- North Cyprus is outside the EU roaming framework, so UK and EU roaming allowances don't apply on its networks.
- Generic 'Cyprus' or 'Turkey' eSIMs usually exclude the north; if you're staying there or flying into Ercan, buy one that specifically says Northern Cyprus.
- Switch data roaming off before crossing the Green Line: southern SIMs are charged per MB in the north.
- In the north, local SIMs need passport registration in person; KKTCELL tourist packs start at around 429 TL for 15 days with 40GB.
Common questions
Does EU roaming work in North Cyprus?
No. North Cyprus sits outside the EU roaming framework, so roam-like-at-home deals don't apply on its networks.
Can I buy a SIM card at Larnaca airport?
Yes. Cyta, Epic and PrimeTel have kiosks in the arrivals hall; take your passport.
What is the emergency number in Cyprus?
Dial 112 or 199 in the Republic of Cyprus for police, fire or ambulance.
