Mobile in Spain: what to know

Mobile networks

MovistarBest overall network in Opensignal's 2026 Spain report and the most reliable for small villages, mountains and islands.
Orange (MasOrange)Part of MasOrange (with Yoigo and MasMovil), Spain's biggest group by lines; joint best with Movistar for time on network.
VodafoneAround 90% 5G population coverage; a solid all-rounder, with Lowi as its budget brand.
DIGIBudget operator that recorded the fastest 5G speeds in Opensignal's 2026 tests.

Coverage

Expect strong 4G or 5G in the big cities, along the coast and on the Balearic and Canary Islands, but gaps remain in parts of the Pyrenees, inland Andalusia, remote sierras and national parks.

Wi-Fi

Free Wi-Fi is widely available at airports, train stations, hotels, cafes, restaurants, shopping centres and libraries, but gets less predictable away from cities and tourist areas.

WhatsApp and FaceTime calls

No restrictions: WhatsApp, FaceTime and other app calls work normally over Spanish mobile data and Wi-Fi.

Buying a local SIM

Easy, but Spanish law requires prepaid SIMs to be registered with ID, and most operators now want a passport rather than a foreign ID card. Buy at operator or phone shops in town, as airport SIM stands are overpriced. Prepaid bundles typically cost about EUR 7 to 10 for 50 to 100GB, or EUR 15 to 20 for several hundred GB.

Tips for UK travellers

  1. Pick Movistar for road trips and rural areas: it topped Opensignal's 2026 report and its 4G reaches small villages most reliably.
  2. Take your passport to buy a SIM: most Spanish operators now refuse non-Spanish ID cards for prepaid registration.
  3. Andorra is outside the EU roaming area, so near the Pyrenees border check your phone hasn't switched to an Andorran network, or turn data roaming off.
  4. On ferries from the UK to Santander or Bilbao, switch data roaming off at sea: Ofcom warns phones can connect to a ship's satellite network, which costs far more than normal roaming.
FAQ

Common questions

Do I need a passport to buy a SIM card in Spain?

Yes. Prepaid SIMs must be registered with an ID document, and for UK visitors that means your passport.

Which mobile network has the best coverage in Spain?

Movistar, which won most awards in Opensignal's 2026 report and is strongest in rural areas; Orange is a close second on availability.

Is roaming free for UK phones in Spain?

Not automatically. Since Brexit, UK networks set their own rules and many charge a daily fee to use your allowance in Europe, so check your network's roaming page before you go.
