Local know-how

Mobile in Netherlands: what to know

Mobile networks

KPNMarket leader with strong nationwide 4G and 5G.
OdidoFormerly T-Mobile Netherlands; top for speed, availability and reliability in Opensignal's March 2025 report.
VodafoneGood-value prepaid data bundles for tourists.

Coverage

Excellent: all three networks have around 97% 4G availability, with 5G in virtually all cities, towns and tourist attractions.

Wi-Fi

Hotels and cafes commonly offer free Wi-Fi, but NS train Wi-Fi is slow and basic, so mobile data is better on the train.

WhatsApp and FaceTime calls

No restrictions: WhatsApp, FaceTime and other app calls work normally over Dutch mobile data and Wi-Fi.

Buying a local SIM

Very easy: no registration or ID is needed. SIMs are sold at supermarkets such as Albert Heijn, Kruidvat, kiosks, phone shops and Schiphol (where prices are higher). KPN starter packs start at about EUR 5, and Vodafone prepaid data runs from EUR 15 for 4GB to EUR 30 for 10GB.

Emergency number

112 (non-emergency police 0900 8844)

Tips for UK travellers

  1. There's no SIM registration in the Netherlands, so you can pick one up in a supermarket without showing ID.
  2. Odido beat KPN and Vodafone on speed, availability and reliability in Opensignal's March 2025 report.
  3. NS only keeps train Wi-Fi because its contract requires it, and it only handles email and basic browsing, so rely on 4G or 5G instead.
  4. On North Sea ferries from Hull, Harwich or Newcastle, switch data roaming off to avoid the ship's satellite network charges and use onboard Wi-Fi.

What is the non-emergency police number in the Netherlands?

Call 0900 8844 for the local police; for emergencies call 112.
