Local know-how

Mobile in Croatia: what to know

Mobile networks

Hrvatski Telekom (T-Mobile)Deutsche Telekom-owned market leader with the fastest downloads in Opensignal's late-2025 report.
A1Austrian-owned operator (formerly Vip) with its own nationwide network.
TelemachNamed Croatia's best network by Opensignal in November 2025 for reliability, consistency and coverage.

Coverage

4G and 5G are good in cities, along the coast and in hotspots like Plitvice, but near the long border with Bosnia and Herzegovina phones can switch to Bosnian networks, which are outside the EU.

Wi-Fi

Hotels, holiday apartments and cafes in tourist areas usually offer Wi-Fi.

WhatsApp and FaceTime calls

No restrictions: WhatsApp, FaceTime and other app calls work normally over Croatian mobile data and Wi-Fi.

Buying a local SIM

Very easy: prepaid SIMs are sold without registration at Tisak and iNovine kiosks (including at Zagreb, Split, Dubrovnik and Zadar airports), post offices, petrol stations and operator shops. Tourist packs cost about EUR 10 to 11.50 for 10 days of unlimited data.

Emergency number

112

Tips for UK travellers

  1. Driving to Dubrovnik? Use the Peljesac Bridge to bypass Neum; if you do pass through Bosnia, switch data roaming off or use flight mode.
  2. Croatian tourist SIMs usually only work in Croatia with no EU roaming, so use a Europe-wide eSIM if you're carrying on to Slovenia or Italy.
  3. Telemach was named Croatia's best network by Opensignal in November 2025, while Hrvatski Telekom had the fastest average downloads.
  4. Tourist SIM packs are mostly seasonal (roughly May to October), so out of season buy a standard prepaid starter pack instead.
FAQ

Common questions

Do I need a passport to buy a SIM card in Croatia?

Usually not. Croatian prepaid SIMs are sold without registration at kiosks, post offices and petrol stations.

Will my phone roam onto a Bosnian network near Dubrovnik?

It can, around Neum and along the Bosnian border. Bosnia isn't in the EU, so take the Peljesac Bridge or switch data roaming off to avoid high charges.

What is the emergency number in Croatia?

112 for ambulance, fire and police.
