Mobile in Vietnam: what to know
Mobile networks
Coverage
Coverage is good in cities and along the main tourist route, but in the far north (Ha Giang, Sapa) and on islands Viettel is noticeably more reliable than MobiFone or VinaPhone.
Wi-Fi
Free Wi-Fi is available in almost every hotel and cafe, but it is unreliable when you are moving between cities, so most people still want mobile data.
WhatsApp and FaceTime calls
WhatsApp, FaceTime and Zalo calls work normally, but Vietnam ordered Telegram to be blocked from June 2025.
Buying a local SIM
Easy. Official carrier booths at Noi Bai (Hanoi), Tan Son Nhat (Ho Chi Minh City), Da Nang and Cam Ranh airports, plus carrier stores and phone shops like The Gioi Di Dong and FPT Shop in town. Your passport is scanned and a face photo taken on the spot. Tourist SIMs with data cost roughly 60,000-270,000 VND.
Emergency number
113 police, 115 ambulance, 114 fire, 112 search and rescue (operators speak Vietnamese only)
Tips for UK travellers
- Buy only where your passport is scanned and your photo is taken on the spot; unregistered SIMs from unmarked stalls can cut off within days.
- Heading to Ha Giang, Sapa or the islands? Pick Viettel for the best signal.
- Vietnam ordered Telegram blocked from June 2025, so use WhatsApp or Zalo to keep in touch with hotels, guides and drivers.
- Emergency lines are answered in Vietnamese only, so save your hotel's number and ask them to call for you if you can.
Common questions
Do I need a passport to buy a SIM card in Vietnam?
Yes. SIMs must be registered with your passport and a face photo, and unregistered cards sold without ID tend to be cut off within days.
Does Telegram work in Vietnam?
No. Vietnam ordered Telegram blocked in June 2025; WhatsApp and the local app Zalo still work.
Which Vietnamese network is best for Sapa and Ha Giang?
Viettel, which has the widest coverage in mountain areas; MobiFone is best avoided for rural northern trips.
