Local know-how

Mobile in Portugal: what to know

Mobile networks

MEOMarket leader with around 40% share; a good pick for mixed mainland routes and the islands.
VodafoneLargest 5G footprint in 2026, strongest for city 5G.
NOSSolid alternative to MEO for mainland touring.
DIGIBudget newcomer launched November 2024; mainland only, with no mobile service on Madeira or the Azores.

Coverage

Cities and the coast have strong 4G with growing 5G, and MEO, NOS and Vodafone also cover Madeira and the Azores, but hilly inland areas can still have gaps.

Wi-Fi

Free Wi-Fi is common in hotels, cafes and restaurants in towns and resorts.

WhatsApp and FaceTime calls

No restrictions: WhatsApp, FaceTime and other app calls work normally over Portuguese mobile data and Wi-Fi.

Buying a local SIM

Easy. MEO and Vodafone have kiosks in Terminal 1 at Lisbon airport and desks near baggage claim at Porto and Faro, and MEO, NOS and Vodafone sell prepaid SIMs in their shops and in supermarkets such as Continente and Pingo Doce. Take your passport as sellers may ask for it. Tourist packs cost roughly EUR 15 to 20, for example Vodafone Travellers at EUR 20 for 30 days.

Emergency number

112

Tips for UK travellers

  1. Heading to Madeira or the Azores? Skip DIGI, which has no mobile service there, and use MEO, NOS or Vodafone.
  2. Vodafone had Portugal's biggest 5G network in 2026, so it is the one to pick if you'll mostly be in Lisbon or Porto.
  3. Download offline maps before hiking or driving inland: no network fully covers the hills.
  4. A Portuguese SIM is an EU SIM, so it keeps working at domestic rates if you cross into Spain.
FAQ

Common questions

Can I buy a SIM card at Lisbon airport?

Yes. MEO and Vodafone have kiosks in Terminal 1, and there are desks near baggage claim at Porto and Faro too.

Does DIGI work in Madeira or the Azores?

No. DIGI says its mobile service is unavailable on both, so choose MEO, NOS or Vodafone for island trips.

What is the emergency number in Portugal?

112 for ambulance, fire and police.
