Local know-how

Mobile in Germany: what to know

Mobile networks

TelekomOpensignal's Best Network in November 2025 and the strongest in the countryside and along railways.
VodafoneSecond-biggest network; Lidl Connect runs on it.
O2 (Telefonica)Usually cheapest; narrowly won Opensignal's coverage experience award in November 2025. Aldi Talk runs on it.
1&1Newest network, still building out and roaming on Vodafone elsewhere.

Coverage

About 98% of Germany's land area has 4G or 5G, but rural dead spots (Funkloecher) still exist and signal on trains often drops because carriages and metal-coated windows block it.

Wi-Fi

Deutsche Bahn offers free Wi-Fi on ICE and IC trains in both classes with no time limit, and hotels generally include Wi-Fi, though train Wi-Fi can be slow.

WhatsApp and FaceTime calls

No restrictions: WhatsApp, FaceTime and other app calls work normally over German mobile data and Wi-Fi.

Buying a local SIM

Harder than most of Europe: every prepaid SIM must be ID-verified by law. Either verify in an operator shop, or buy a supermarket SIM (Aldi Talk, Lidl Connect) and verify by video call or at a post office (PostIdent) with your passport; a hotel address is accepted. Starter kits cost about EUR 5 to 10 and 25GB bundles about EUR 9 to 10.

Emergency number

112 (fire and ambulance), 110 (police)

Tips for UK travellers

  1. To skip Germany's SIM ID checks, install a travel eSIM before you go.
  2. Telekom is best for rail journeys and the countryside; budget brands congstar and fraenk use the same network for less.
  3. Mobile signal on trains still drops in places, so use DB's free Wi-Fi and download maps and entertainment before you travel.
  4. 3G was switched off in 2021 and 2G ends in 2028, so your phone needs 4G calling (VoLTE) to work properly.
FAQ

Common questions

Do I need to register a SIM card in Germany?

Yes. All prepaid SIMs need ID verification by law; a passport is enough and your hotel or holiday let address is accepted.

Is there free Wi-Fi on Deutsche Bahn trains?

Yes. ICE and IC trains have free Wi-Fi in first and second class with no time limit, though speeds can be slow.

What is the police number in Germany?

Call 110 for the police and 112 for fire or an ambulance.
