The quick rule

  • EU, on O2, giffgaff, SMARTY, iD Mobile or Tesco: roaming is included, so you probably don't need an eSIM for a normal holiday.
  • EU, on EE, Vodafone or Three: about £2.75 a day. For more than about 5 days, a 10GB eSIM is usually cheaper.
  • Turkey, Egypt, the USA and most of the world: usually £6 to £8 a day on the big networks. An eSIM is almost always cheaper.
  • On Sky Mobile: £2 a day in over 100 countries is good value. An eSIM only wins on longer trips.

Before you go

  • Check your network's roaming page for your exact plan. Older and newer plans are often charged differently.
  • If you use an eSIM, turn off data roaming on your UK SIM so it can't run up charges in the background.
  • Keep your UK SIM switched on for texts, so you still get bank security codes.
  • Watch out for ship and ferry networks, which can cost a fortune. More roaming traps.
