Local know-how

Mobile in Greece: what to know

Mobile networks

CosmoteOpensignal's Best Network in March 2026, with the best coverage and fastest downloads.
VodafoneHighest time-on-network score in Opensignal's tests and good island coverage.
NovaSlightly cheaper, with good coverage in towns and cities.

Coverage

4G covers virtually all populated areas including small islands, but remote mountains have occasional gaps, and on islands close to Turkey or Albania phones can latch onto a foreign network.

Wi-Fi

Free Wi-Fi is widespread in cafes, hotels, museums and Athens metro stations; on Blue Star ferries Wi-Fi is paid on most routes but free on Saronic routes.

WhatsApp and FaceTime calls

No restrictions: WhatsApp, FaceTime and other app calls work normally over Greek mobile data and Wi-Fi.

Buying a local SIM

Greek law requires registration, so take your passport; it takes a couple of minutes at Cosmote or Vodafone shops, including their airport arrivals desks, or at many kiosks. Tourist SIMs cost about EUR 15 to 25 with 5 to 10GB plus minutes.

Emergency number

112

Tips for UK travellers

  1. On Lesvos, Chios, Samos, Kos and Rhodes, set your phone to manual network selection and choose Cosmote, Vodafone or Nova so it doesn't roam onto a Turkish mast at non-EU rates.
  2. On Corfu, phones can pick up Albanian networks (some visitors get a 'Welcome to Albania' text), so choose a Greek network manually there too.
  3. Cosmote is the safest pick for island hopping after winning Opensignal's coverage and speed awards in March 2026.
  4. On ferries, turn data roaming off or buy the onboard Wi-Fi, as Ofcom warns phones at sea can connect to a ship's satellite network with high charges.
FAQ

Common questions

Will 999 work from my UK phone in Greece?

Yes. The FCDO says calling 999 from a UK mobile in Greece automatically transfers you to Greek emergency services, but the local number is 112.

Do I need a passport to buy a SIM card in Greece?

Yes. Greek law requires registration, which takes a couple of minutes at the point of sale.

Why did my phone connect to a Turkish network in Kos?

Kos and other eastern Aegean islands are only a few kilometres from Turkey, so your phone may pick the stronger Turkish signal. Select a Greek network manually to avoid non-EU roaming charges.
