Mobile in Morocco: what to know
Mobile networks
Coverage
Coverage is good in cities and along main roads, but it fades in Atlas valleys and passes on every network and is patchy in the desert, where Maroc Telecom or inwi are the better picks.
Wi-Fi
Virtually every riad, hotel and cafe in the cities has free Wi-Fi, though it can be patchy through thick medina walls, and desert camps range from Starlink to nothing at all.
WhatsApp and FaceTime calls
WhatsApp voice and video calls work normally. Morocco blocked mobile internet calls in early 2016 but lifted the ban in November 2016.
Buying a local SIM
Easy. inwi, Orange and Maroc Telecom have shops in Casablanca airport arrivals open 24 hours, and there are official shops at Marrakech and Rabat airports too. Show your passport and registration takes a couple of minutes, free of charge. Expect around 100 MAD for 10-20GB, or about 200 MAD for 50GB.
Emergency number
190 police, 150 ambulance and fire, 177 Gendarmerie (rural areas)
Tips for UK travellers
- Buy from the official operator shops in arrivals rather than street sellers, and bring your passport for on-the-spot registration.
- Heading to the Atlas or the Sahara? Choose inwi or Maroc Telecom, and download offline maps because signal drops in valleys and passes.
- Morocco runs on WhatsApp: riads, drivers and guides use it for bookings and pickups, so make sure you have data on arrival.
- Ask your desert camp before you go whether it has any internet; some now have Starlink but others have none.
Common questions
Can I buy a SIM card at Marrakech or Casablanca airport?
Yes. Casablanca has 24-hour inwi, Orange and Maroc Telecom shops in arrivals, and Marrakech and Rabat airports have official shops too; you need your passport.
Do WhatsApp calls work in Morocco?
Yes. WhatsApp voice and video calls work over Moroccan mobile data and Wi-Fi; a 2016 ban on internet calls was lifted that November.
Will my phone work in the Sahara?
Only patchily. inwi and Maroc Telecom are the best bets, and some desert camps have Starlink Wi-Fi, but check with your camp and don't rely on a signal.
