Install before you fly
Ubigi, Sim Local and Saily all warn that their app or website may not work from inside Turkey, and there are reports of Turkey blocking many eSIM provider sites. An eSIM that is already installed on your phone keeps working. So buy it, install it at home over Wi-Fi, and switch it on when you land.
Why not just use your UK SIM?
Because Turkey is not in the EU, it isn't covered by the "roam like at home" deals most UK networks offer. On the big networks it is usually £6 to £8 a day, which is £42 to £56 for a week. Tesco Mobile and iD Mobile don't include it at all. Sky Mobile is the exception, at £2 a day.
Which eSIM to pick
- A week all-inclusive: 1GB to 3GB is usually enough if the hotel Wi-Fi is decent. Saily and Nomad start at around £3.
- Two weeks, or you use a lot of data: 10GB for 30 days from Sim Local, Nomad or Ubigi is about £9 to £10.
- Heavy streaming or working: Nomad's 50GB for £23 is better value than most unlimited plans.
- Also visiting Bulgaria or Greece: Saily's Europe plan covers Turkey too. Many "Europe" eSIMs do not, so check.
The 120 day rule
Turkey requires foreign phones to be registered if they are used on a Turkish SIM for more than 120 days, and the fee is high. This matters if you buy a local Turkish SIM. Travel eSIMs work by roaming, and are reported not to start the countdown. For a normal holiday it won't affect you either way.
Common questions
Is Turkey included in EU roaming?
No. Turkey is not in the EU, so it is outside the Europe roaming zone on almost every UK network. Expect £6 to £8 a day on EE, O2, Vodafone and Three, and no roaming on some others.
Can I buy an eSIM when I get to Turkey?
It is safer not to rely on it. Several eSIM providers say their website or app may not work inside Turkey. Buy and install your eSIM at home before you fly.
Which networks are there in Turkey?
Turkcell, Türk Telekom and Vodafone Turkey. Most travel eSIMs use Türk Telekom or Turkcell.
Does a Europe eSIM cover Turkey?
Not always. Saily's Europe plan does, but Holafly's and Nomad's Europe plans do not. Check the country list before you buy.
