Mobile in Canada: what to know
Mobile networks
Coverage
Good in cities and along main highways, but there are long stretches with no signal in the mountains and the north, including the Icefields Parkway between Lake Louise and Jasper.
Wi-Fi
Hotels, cafes, pubs and restaurants in towns such as Banff and Jasper usually offer free Wi-Fi, but outside town sites it is hard to find.
WhatsApp and FaceTime calls
No restrictions: WhatsApp, FaceTime and other app calls work normally over Canadian mobile data and Wi-Fi.
Buying a local SIM
Easy but pricey. Take your passport, as shops may ask for ID. Buy from carrier stores, Walmart, Best Buy or phone shops (airports charge more). Budget brands like Lucky Mobile and Chatr cost about CAD 25 to 39 a month, and Lucky Mobile's tourist eSIM is CAD 25 for 4GB or CAD 35 for 25GB over 30 days.
Emergency number
911
Tips for UK travellers
- Canada has some of the highest prepaid prices in the Americas, so compare a travel eSIM or Lucky Mobile's tourist eSIM with your UK roaming add-on.
- Download offline maps before driving the Icefields Parkway (Highway 93N): there are long stretches with no signal.
- Telus is the best all-round network, especially out west; budget brands trade some coverage and speed for price.
- Combining the US and Canada? T-Mobile's Prepaid US Pass eSIM includes 5GB of Canada data, but you have to buy it once you're in the US.
Common questions
Is it expensive to use a phone in Canada?
Yes. Canadian prepaid plans are among the priciest in the Americas, so a travel eSIM or tourist eSIM often works out cheaper.
Is there phone signal in Banff and Jasper?
In the towns yes, but coverage is spotty outside them and there are long gaps on the Icefields Parkway.
Do I need ID to buy a SIM card in Canada?
Take your passport: many shops ask for photo ID, though some carriers only ask for your name.
Going somewhere else too?
Add more stops in the trip finder to see if a multi-country eSIM is cheaper.
