Local know-how

Mobile in Dominican Republic: what to know

Mobile networks

ClaroBest nationwide coverage and speeds, including resorts, rural towns and road trips.
AlticeGood in cities and tourist areas but less consistent in remote spots; often generous promo bundles.
VivaCheapest but slowest, with coverage mostly limited to Santo Domingo and other cities.

Coverage

4G is widespread and 5G is mainly in Santo Domingo, Santiago and Punta Cana, with Claro the most reliable once you leave the resorts and cities.

Wi-Fi

Resorts and hotels offer Wi-Fi, but it is often overloaded by guests and patchy away from the lobby, so it is no substitute for mobile data if you go out exploring.

WhatsApp and FaceTime calls

No known restrictions: WhatsApp and FaceTime calls work over mobile data and Wi-Fi, and WhatsApp is widely used to contact guides and drivers.

Buying a local SIM

Easy, but not at every airport. Claro and Altice have shops at Santo Domingo (Las Americas) airport, open roughly 8am to 8pm, but there are none in the terminals at Punta Cana, Puerto Plata, Santiago or La Romana; from Punta Cana airport the nearest shops are at BlueMall, about 3 minutes away. Show your passport; staff usually take a photo too. A SIM costs 100-150 DOP, and Claro's 8GB for 5 days is about 170 DOP.

Emergency number

911 (ambulance, fire, police; limited coverage outside Santo Domingo); tourist police +1 809 200 3500

Tips for UK travellers

  1. Flying into Punta Cana? There's no SIM shop in the terminal, so either land with an eSIM or stop at the Claro or Altice stores in BlueMall nearby.
  2. Choose Claro if you're leaving the resort, as Viva barely covers anywhere outside the cities.
  3. Save the tourist police number, +1 809 200 3500: 911 doesn't have full coverage across the country.
  4. Check how long your data plan lasts, as many Dominican prepaid bundles expire after 5 days and need renewing.
FAQ

Common questions

Which mobile network is best in the Dominican Republic?

Claro has the best nationwide coverage and speeds, so it is the safest choice, especially outside the cities.

Can I buy a SIM card at Punta Cana airport?

Not in the terminal. The nearest Claro and Altice shops are at BlueMall, a few minutes away, while Santo Domingo airport has shops inside.

Does 911 work in the Dominican Republic?

Yes, but it doesn't cover the whole country. Outside Santo Domingo the UK government advises calling the tourist police on +1 809 200 3500.
